GPHA commissions 15 new trucks to boost Tema Port operations

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 new SINOTRUK HOWO trucks at Tema Port. This move aims to improve efficiency and manage rising cargo volumes.

The 15 trucks come with 60-ton flatbed trailers. Three of the trucks have a power rating of 400 horsepower. The remaining twelve trucks are rated at 430 horsepower.

Officials from GPHA, Ecobank Ghana, and Zonda Tec Ghana Ltd attended the commissioning ceremony. These new trucks are part of GPHA’s modernization efforts. The goal is to enhance cargo handling and reduce turnaround times.

Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono is the GPHA Director General. He emphasized the need for ongoing investment in logistics infrastructure. “These trucks will significantly enhance our cargo handling capacity,” he stated.

He also highlighted the importance of maintaining the trucks for longevity. This maintenance will support efficient trade facilitation.

Tema Port Director Mr. Tebon Zuma Esq. noted that the new trucks meet international safety standards. They also comply with emissions regulations, showing GPHA’s commitment to sustainability. An additional 15 trucks will arrive in three weeks, with plans for a total of 100 this year.

“These trucks reflect our commitment to operational excellence,” Mr. Zuma said. He added that they will improve container handling and internal haulage at the port.

Mr. Zuma mentioned that continuous staff training is crucial for maintaining the new fleet effectively. He praised the procurement and engineering teams, along with Ecobank Ghana, for their contributions to this project.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed this development enthusiastically. They believe enhanced logistics will benefit the entire supply chain and reduce trade bottlenecks.

The new trucks will start operations immediately, marking a significant milestone for GPHA's mission to provide world-class port services.
