GPRTU’s 15% fare reduction does not include us – Online Drivers Union

Francis Tengey, President of the Ghana Online Drivers Union, spoke out. He said the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is reducing fares by 15%. However, this reduction does not apply to online drivers.

The Online Drivers Union was not consulted by GPRTU. They represent Uber, Bolt, and Yango drivers. Tengey stated that these drivers should not expect fare reductions. This is despite the cedi's appreciation and falling fuel prices.

Tengey explained that their union is not recognized by GPRTU or the Trade Union. They have applied for affiliation with TUC since 2021 but have not received it yet. Therefore, GPRTU's directive does not include them.

He added that they were absent from meetings between GPRTU and the Ministry of Transport. As a result, their customers cannot benefit from the fare reduction. Tengey urged the government to recognize their union for better regulation.

Meanwhile, GPRTU has asked the Ghana Police Service to enforce compliance with fare reductions. They claim to have informed their members about this change. However, some unregistered unions are not complying.

GPRTU Public Relations Officer Abbas Ibrahim Moro emphasized that law enforcement must ensure compliance. He stated that unlawful actions should be addressed firmly.

Additionally, CUTS International has called on the government to take action. They want to ensure Ghanaians benefit from recent fuel price drops.
