GPRTU: Govt betrayed us with fuel levy after fare cut

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) feels betrayed by the government. This follows the government's decision to increase the Energy Sector Levy by GH₵1. The increase came shortly after drivers were asked to reduce fares by 15%.

The union has threatened a nationwide strike if the government does not act on this levy hike by June 10, 2025. Abass Imoro, GPRTU's Industrial Relations Officer, expressed disappointment during an interview on Citi Eyewitness News.

He criticized the government for a lack of transparency and consultation. Imoro stated that if they had known about the fuel levy hike, their approach to fare reduction would have changed.

He said, “They knew very well that they had this under their sleeves.” He added that it was painful they did not inform them about the government's intentions.

Imoro emphasized that GPRTU plays a significant role in fuel consumption. He believes they should have been consulted before any decisions were made.

According to him, the GH₵1 increase on fuel completely undermines the 15% fare reduction. He noted that these two changes cannot coexist effectively.

Imoro reiterated that GPRTU has given the government until June 10 for discussions. If no engagement occurs, there may be actions from the union.
