GRA collaborates with FDA, GSA to seize and destroy 850 smuggled ‘Orexi’ diapers

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA, Customs Division) has taken action against smuggled goods. They worked with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). Together, they intercepted and destroyed 850 cartons of Orexi brand diapers. These diapers entered the country without proper declaration or tax clearance.

The diapers were flagged during routine cargo checks. Officials found them to be unregistered, substandard, and illegally imported. The destruction took place at the Korle Lagoon Klert dump site under strict supervision.

A GRA Customs official stated that this operation protects public health. It also prevents significant tax evasion and revenue loss for the state. Illegal importations pose a health risk and harm the economy. Smuggling deprives the nation of funds needed for infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

This interception follows alarming international reports. A March 2025 exposé by China’s CCTV News revealed illegal reprocessing of used hygiene products. These products are shipped to developing markets like Ghana.

To enhance enforcement, GRA Customs has implemented several measures:

- Stricter monitoring at ports and inland borders.
- Real-time data sharing with the FDA and National Security.
- Enhanced penalties for undeclared or misdeclared goods.
- Close surveillance of distributors handling unregistered brands.

GRA Customs urges all importers and freight forwarders to comply with regulations. The public should report suspicious diaper brands sold at low prices or lacking FDA approval marks.

Officials emphasize that this seizure highlights the dangers of tax evasion through smuggling. Such actions endanger lives and undermine national development.
