The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are working to restore power in Obuasi and New Edubiase.
A fire at the Obuasi Substation on Wednesday, May 21, caused a power outage. This incident left parts of the Ashanti Region without electricity.
GRIDCo stated that engineers are assessing the equipment at the substation. They need to verify its integrity before reconnecting customers to the national grid.
Benjamin Owusu Antwi, ECG's Public Relations Officer for Ashanti West, explained the situation. He noted that the fire occurred around 9:12 PM at a key supply point.
This bulk supply point is crucial for ECG's operations. It is where ECG receives power from GRIDCo to distribute to customers.
If this point is damaged, ECG cannot provide electricity. The fire affected equipment at GRIDCo’s end of the supply point.
Mr. Owusu Antwi mentioned that technical teams from both companies are on-site. They are assessing damage and starting restoration efforts.
GRIDCo engineers are evaluating what can be salvaged for repairs. The sub-transmission team and Asante South maintenance team are also present.
He apologized to residents and businesses impacted by the outage. He emphasized that this was due to the fire, not any deliberate action.
Engineers are working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.
