GRIDCo rebuilds damaged Akwatia–New Obuasi power tower

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has finished rebuilding a damaged tower. This tower is part of the 161kV Transmission Line from Akwatia to New Obuasi. The damage was caused by illegal chainsaw operators.

Final conductor stringing works will be done by Sunday, April 20, 2025. This will fully restore service. The incident occurred on March 17, 2025, disrupting power supply to Kumasi and nearby areas.

According to GRIDCo's statement, a fallen tree hit the transmission tower. This led to a major outage in the region. Maintenance engineers quickly assessed the damage.

They found that heavy-duty equipment was needed for repairs. Dismantling the damaged structure required widening access to the site. GRIDCo used this opportunity to highlight issues with illegal chainsaw operations and 'galamsey' activities.

These activities often harm critical transmission infrastructure. The company urged the public to help stop these illegal practices. This support is vital for protecting Ghana’s electricity supply.

GRIDCo also apologized to residents of Kumasi and surrounding areas for the disruptions. They reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a stable electricity transmission system across the country and beyond.
