GRIDCo restores power after national system disturbance

A widespread blackout affected major parts of Ghana on Thursday night, April 3. The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) confirmed that the issue has been fully resolved.

The blackout disrupted electricity in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Bui, Tumu, Sawla, and northern Ghana. GRIDCo stated that a fault occurred on the Tafo-Nkawkaw transmission line at 20:09 hours.

This initial fault caused failures in nearby lines. As a result, several power plants shut down. The sudden drop in power generation left many areas dark, especially beyond Kumasi.

GRIDCo’s System Control Centre acted quickly to stabilize the national grid. They initiated emergency measures to restore power.

Restoration efforts began promptly. By 22:57 hours, full power was restored to affected areas.

GRIDCo apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage. Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo, expressed sincere regret to the public for the disruption.
