GRIDCo workers demand fairness, transparency amid operational decline

The Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has raised concerns. They highlighted financial, operational, and governance challenges facing the company. The SSA urges a stronger partnership with management to secure GRIDCo’s future.

At the 7th Biennial Delegates Congress in Tamale, they discussed embedded power generation. This allows consumers and businesses to produce their own electricity. As a result, GRIDCo's revenue is decreasing during a time of rising debts and aging infrastructure.

SSA Chairman Wisdom Kojo Adenyo emphasized the importance of their role. He stated that collaboration is needed to address these challenges. The Congress theme was “Forging Partnership for a Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future.” It brought together sector professionals to discuss energy dynamics and strategies for transformation.

The SSA outlined several priority areas for reform. These include securing tax waivers on imported equipment and implementing the Cash Waterfall Mechanism fully. They also want to intensify debt recovery from key clients like ECG and invest in grid modernization.

Beyond operational issues, Adenyo raised concerns about internal governance practices. Members are unhappy with hiring external personnel for senior roles. They believe this bypasses qualified internal candidates and lowers staff morale.

“This trend violates our Conditions of Service,” warned the SSA. It could demotivate employees and increase wage costs amid cash flow issues. The Association called on GRIDCo’s leadership to promote equity and develop internal capacity.

They warned that disengaged staff could harm company performance. The SSA urged transparency, fairness, and commitment to sustainability and staff welfare. “Our survival as a company hinges on how well we respond together,” they concluded.
