GRNMA threatens strike over delayed agreement implementation

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) will begin industrial actions on June 2, 2025. This protest is against the government's failure to implement their Collective Agreement signed in 2024.

On May 28, the Association issued a statement about the delay. They said this delay harms their members and affects healthcare quality nationwide. The planned actions start with members wearing red arm and headbands on June 2 and 3.

From June 4 to 8, they will withdraw Out Patient Department (OPD) services. A complete withdrawal of all services will begin on June 9, 2025. The Collective Agreement was signed in May 2024 between GRNMA and the Ministry of Health.

The Association noted that legal proceedings by some members delayed implementation. However, a court ruling in January 2025 cleared the way for enforcement. Despite follow-ups through letters and meetings, there has been no progress.

One year later, the Collective Agreement remains unimplemented. The GRNMA expressed frustration over excuses from both leadership and the employer. They urged all nurses and midwives to comply with the planned industrial actions.

The statement emphasized that these actions are necessary to demand what they deserve. If carried out, these actions could lead to a nationwide shutdown of nursing services. This comes at a time when Ghana is dealing with an outbreak of MPox disease.
