GSA boss raises alarm over uncalibrated ECG meters, warns of billing inaccuracies

The Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. Alex Dodoo, has serious concerns about electricity meters in Ghana.

He spoke at a conference organized by the International Electrotechnical Commission. Many people are frustrated with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to power supply issues and inefficiencies.

Prof. Dodoo revealed that many ECG meters have not been calibrated or verified by the GSA. This verification is required under National Instrumentation Regulation NI2413.

“Very few of our meters have been calibrated and verified by the GSA,” he said. He added that if a meter is not verified, its accuracy is questionable.

He warned that improper calibration affects billing accuracy and energy efficiency. This poses risks to consumers and the economy as a whole.

“The law states it must be verified and calibrated,” he noted. He mentioned that they are working with ECG and PURC to ensure all meters are properly calibrated.

Prof. Dodoo emphasized the GSA’s legal role in this process. Without proper verification, consumer protection cannot be guaranteed.

He also linked this issue to national development goals. It is crucial for supporting the government's aim for a 24-hour economy.

“It’s important we provide quality infrastructure for this economy to succeed,” he concluded.
