The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, has raised concerns over the financial strain of teacher trainee allowances on public funds.
Speaking at the 15th congregation of Akatsi College of Education, he revealed that the government owes GH₵159.9 million in arrears for the 2023/2024 academic year, with total projected costs reaching GH₵380 million.
He called for a national discussion on the sustainability of such interventions. Meanwhile, Akatsi College Principal, Dr. Felix Kwame Kumedzro, advocated for the institution’s upgrade to a University College to serve the Volta Region’s educational needs.
Additionally, AAMUSTED Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Boateng, urged stakeholders to modernize technical and vocational education through industry collaboration, innovation, and STEM-focused policies.
