GTEC cautions GUTA president over use of honorary ‘Doctor’ title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has warned Dr. Joseph Obeng. He is the President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA).

On May 14, 2025, GTEC sent a letter to Dr. Obeng. They requested details about his honorary doctorate. This includes the awarding institution, the process, and the date it was given.

GTEC stated that using honorary doctorates as formal titles is unethical. It also violates the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023). Other education laws are relevant to this issue as well.

The Commission warned that ignoring their directive could lead to sanctions. They have regulatory authority over such matters.

GTEC urged Dr. Obeng to take responsibility. He should stop using the title “Dr.” immediately in public settings.
