The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a final warning. This warning targets individuals misusing honorary doctorate and professorial titles. GTEC states that such practices are unethical and misleading. They undermine the integrity of Ghana's higher education system.
In a statement, Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo reiterated previous cautions. He highlighted that using titles like "Dr." and "Prof." is inappropriate for honorary award recipients. The Commission specifically addressed politicians, business leaders, and religious figures. They urged these public personalities to stop using these titles publicly.
The statement described this practice as deceitful and unethical. It also noted that it dilutes the integrity of higher education. The warning follows President John Dramani Mahama's revocation of Anne Sansa Daly’s appointment from the NHIA Board. This decision attracted significant public interest.
A letter from the President's Office announced Daly's immediate removal on May 23, 2025. It was signed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama. Prof. Dr (Med) Ernest Yorke will replace her. Daly had claimed without proof that she was a medical doctor.
GTEC warned it would take strict actions against violators of this directive. Actions may include public disclosure of offenders and legal proceedings. This aims to preserve academic credibility and maintain public trust in education standards.
Under Section 8 (3)(d) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), GTEC can regulate academic titles' use. The Commission has noticed an increase in individuals using honorary titles improperly, leading to misinformation about their credentials.
While recognizing contributions to society is important, GTEC insists on proper conferral of honorary degrees only by accredited institutions in Ghana. Recipients should not use these honorary titles as part of their official names or credentials.
GTEC urges all stakeholders to act responsibly regarding honorary academic titles. Misuse diminishes legitimate qualifications' prestige and erodes public trust in education.
