The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is disappointed. The Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana has gone on strike. This decision comes despite ongoing negotiations with state agencies.
On May 22, GTEC issued a statement signed by Director-General Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai. They called the strike a demonstration of bad faith. The union did not attend a meeting at the National Labour Commission (NLC) on the same day they announced the strike.
The Senior Staff Association declared their nationwide strike on May 21. They cited delays in implementing an agreement signed with the government on November 12, 2024.
GTEC acknowledged this agreement but noted delays were due to transitional challenges after the 2024 elections. A new government was formed, and ministers were appointed in February 2025. The national budget was presented in March 2025.
The Honorable Minister of Education assured them in April about resolving these issues. GTEC expressed regret over the union’s actions. They believe continued dialogue can resolve matters without disrupting academic activities.
