GUTA condemns GTEC’s directive against Dr Obeng’s honorary title

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has criticized the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). GTEC cautioned Dr. Joseph Obeng, GUTA's President, about using his honorary doctorate title.

In a letter dated May 14, 2025, GTEC expressed concerns over Dr. Obeng’s use of “Doctor” in public. They requested details about the awarding institution and the conferral process. GTEC argued that using honorary doctorates as formal titles is unethical and violates education regulations.

They warned that failure to comply could lead to sanctions. In a statement on May 19, GUTA called this action a “malicious attempt” to damage Dr. Obeng’s reputation. They asserted that the honorary title recognizes his contributions to Ghana’s economy and private sector advocacy.

GUTA defended Dr. Obeng’s honorary doctorate from Alpha International Theological Seminary in 2016. They highlighted his Platinum Award for Excellence in Leadership from the Centre for Transformational Leadership that same year.

The union urged GTEC to retract its cautionary letter and apologize publicly. They emphasized that members of the informal sector deserve respect and recognition.

GUTA stated, “Dr. Obeng’s leadership transcends academic credentials.” His contributions impact markets, boardrooms, and national policy discussions.

They urged GTEC to act with discretion when addressing respected figures. Consulting relevant stakeholders before making statements is essential to avoid damaging reputations.

In their full statement, GUTA condemned GTEC's actions as an overreach of authority. They described it as an unjustified attack on a leader dedicated to transforming Ghana's economy.

Dr. Obeng’s honorary title is not just ornamental; it reflects decades of service and advocacy for national development and economic empowerment.

GUTA requests that GTEC retract its press release and apologize for any harm caused to Dr. Obeng's reputation.

They assert their commitment to defending all who serve Ghana with integrity and results-driven leadership.

GUTA stands firmly with Dr. Obeng against any attempts to undermine his dignity or leadership role within the trading community.
