GUTA demands investigations into ECG theft scandal, threatens to fight any increment in utility tariffs

Dr. Joseph Obeng is the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association. He is calling for immediate investigations into theft scandals at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Last month, some containers belonging to ECG reportedly went missing. Recently, National Security Operatives found ECG cables in various locations across the country.

Dr. Obeng believes that misuse and embezzlement by public staff contribute to rising utility tariffs. He says this situation harms local business growth.

He made these comments during the launch of “Tax and Good Governance Month” by the Ghana Revenue Authority in Kumasi.

Dr. Obeng stated, "All the tariffs and taxes we pay to ECG are in vain." He argued that there was no need for tariff increases if funds were misused. He added that inefficiency at ECG hinders local industry growth.

He warned that GUTA will oppose any attempts to raise electricity tariffs until investigations are completed.

"We must evaluate and investigate this issue," he said. If proceeds from ECG are used effectively, it could encourage a shift from trading to manufacturing.

He emphasized that those responsible should be punished and losses recouped before any tariff increases can be justified.
