GUTA rejects increased utility tariffs, demands accountability

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) opposes the recent utility tariff increase. This increase was approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

GUTA believes the reasons for the hike are unjustified. They cite systemic inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement in the utility sector.

This information comes from a statement signed by General Secretary Alpha Shaban on April 15. The statement says the tariff hike unfairly burdens consumers, especially domestic and commercial users.

GUTA criticizes PURC and utility providers for not addressing wastage and corruption. They highlight several issues, including inflated procurement costs benefiting individuals.

They also mention ineffective bill collection from state institutions. This leads to debts that consumers must pay. Other problems include rampant illegal connections and weak oversight by PURC.

GUTA demands stronger government action against corruption. They want stolen state assets recovered and better utility management.

They believe Ghana can grow economically if resources are managed well. Mismanagement in the utility sector raises production costs for local industries and agriculture.

This situation worsens inflation and currency depreciation. GUTA urges collaboration among stakeholders to leverage resources for national development.

Their statement condemns inefficiencies in the utility sector and calls for urgent reforms. They stress the need for transparency, accountability, and better governance to protect consumers.

GUTA argues that corruption and poor management hinder Ghana’s development.
