Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has started controlled spillage from the Weija Dam. This action is a precaution due to the rainy season.
On May 23, GWL issued a press statement. They warned residents downstream to prepare for possible flooding. The spillage aims to protect the dam's structure and prevent disasters.
Currently, the dam's water level is at 45 feet. This is just two feet below the safe limit of 47 feet. As levels rise, GWL urged vulnerable residents to evacuate.
The statement emphasized caution for those living downstream. It advised them to leave the area to avoid emergencies.
The Ga West Municipal Assembly has been asked to desilt the estuary. This will help excess water flow into the sea smoothly. They also need to clear refuse along the river.
GWL stressed that residents should follow disaster management guidance. They must heed warnings from NADMO and other agencies.
Communities at risk include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, and Lower McCarthy Hill. Other affected areas are Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and nearby regions.
GWL concluded by urging public cooperation. This will help prevent past disasters and protect lives and property.
