The Ga Mashie Traditional Council has summoned 15 churches. This includes Calvary Baptist Church and Lighthouse Chapel. They are accused of violating a ban on noise-making. The ban took effect on May 12.
Asafoatse Mankatta leads the taskforce enforcing this directive. He stated that the churches clapped during their services, defying the ban. Some churches refused to accept their summons letters.
Mankatta expressed surprise at Calvary Baptist Church's actions. He said they made noise as if nothing was at stake. The summoned churches must appear before the Traditional Council on Thursday, May 22.
He warned that ignoring the summons could lead to serious consequences. The ban allows singing but prohibits clapping and drumming in church services. Churches with soundproof structures may be exempt from penalties.
The taskforce plans to intensify enforcement starting next Sunday. They urge the Christian community to cooperate with this directive. The one-month ban restricts loudspeakers outside places of worship and roadside evangelism.
It also bans megaphones, tambourines, and musical instruments indoors and outdoors. This annual ban is part of preparations for the Homowo festival, a sacred time for the Ga people.
