The Commonwealth trade landscape is changing, bringing hope to legal professionals. Ghanaian lawyer Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko calls this an exciting time for the legal industry.
Mr. Otchere-Darko was recently appointed Co-Chair of the Commonwealth Legal Network (CLN). He believes there are many opportunities for lawyers and law firms. This optimism comes from a renewed economic vision for the Commonwealth.
In an interview with Asaase Radio, he discussed the new leadership at the Commonwealth Secretariat. They focus on trade and investment partnerships among its 56 member states.
“The new Commonwealth Secretary-General emphasizes trade and investments,” he said. “The future is bright and exciting for lawyers and law firms.”
The CLN operates under the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC). The CWEIC is a business-focused organization accredited by the Commonwealth. It aims to strengthen economic collaboration among member countries.
Otchere-Darko noted the vast economic potential of the Commonwealth. He highlighted that it has a population of 2.7 billion consumers and a GDP of $14.5 trillion.
He mentioned that new leadership aims to double intra-Commonwealth trade by 2030. Both CWEIC and CLN will play key roles in achieving this goal.
This renewed focus on trade will likely increase demand for legal expertise across the Commonwealth. “It means more opportunities for businesses and more work for lawyers,” Otchere-Darko stated, indicating a promising future for legal professionals in international business and trade law.
