The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and other health unions have urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately ban all small-scale mining, both legal and illegal.
This call follows the growing destruction of forests and water bodies due to illegal mining (galamsey), which poses severe public health and environmental risks.
Unions like the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) warn of an impending environmental disaster.
They demand a total mining ban, stronger enforcement, and political party commitments to combat illegal mining in Ghana.
