Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A Jinapor, has called the proposal to declare a state of emergency to tackle illegal mining (galamsey) “draconian and far-reaching.”
While acknowledging the urgency of the situation, he warned that extreme measures could harm the economy and livelihoods.
This response follows calls from the Trades Union Congress and civil society groups urging the government to ban illegal mining and declare a state of emergency.
Jinapor assured that the government will engage with these groups to find a balanced solution to the galamsey crisis without risking further instability.
