Ambassador Johnson, the Director of Policy Planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has made a strong call. He urged the government to enforce laws against foreign nationals involved in illegal mining and gold trading in Ghana.
In an interview with Citi News on May 16, he spoke during a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Johnson stressed the importance of prosecuting foreign nationals engaged in illegal activities. He highlighted that this should align with constitutional provisions and the Vienna Convention.
His comments came after a recent government directive. This directive aims to deport foreign nationals involved in illegal mining and illicit gold trading.
"I believe we need to be informed when foreign nationals are involved," he said. "I presume our Legal and Consular Bureau will be consulted on this matter."
"This is a state governed by rules," he added. "Those rules must apply to both Ghanaians and foreigners."
