Kofi Asare, the Executive Director for EduWatch, has strong opinions on illegal mining. He believes the government is using ineffective methods in this fight.
Asare argues that constant raids and arrests of young miners won't solve the problem. Instead, he suggests targeting the bigger players behind these operations.
He thinks focusing on these key figures will be more effective. Arresting young miners without financial power does little to help.
He stated, "Galamsay is terrorism. Without cutting off funding for expensive excavators, arrests are pointless." He emphasized that the government must trace and prosecute those truly responsible.
Recently, the government has conducted raids in various forest reserves and water bodies. However, there seems to be no end to illegal mining activities.
In Samreboi alone, over 47 illegal miners were arrested. They have been transported to Accra to face legal action.
