Galamsey: Generational Rights Protection Society protests for stronger action

The Generational Rights Protection Society is increasing pressure on the government. They want decisive action against illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah leads the protest. The goal is to highlight concerns about the government's response to galamsey. They propose a stronger approach to end illegal mining.

The group claims illegal mining harms communities and the environment. They say authorities have not intervened meaningfully.

Demonstrators wore red and black clothing at Obra Spot in Circle. Their march will conclude at Jubilee House.

Protesters carried placards with messages like "Blood, Gold, Greed!" and "Stop Galamsey Now!" Their energy and determination were evident.

One protester spoke to JoyNews about her frustration. She mentioned a lack of clean water due to galamsey activities. “I joined this demonstration because there is no potable water where I work,” she said.

Okatakyire Mensah Afrifa also shared his frustrations during the protest. He noted that the President has been in office for four months. However, he believes this should not excuse ongoing devastation from galamsey.

He highlighted rising kidney disease cases and loss of lives among Ghanaians due to illegal mining. Afrifa pointed out that President Mahama sent a bill to Parliament within four months of taking office.

He added that the current President quickly took steps benefiting himself and his government. “It’s all about the scale of preferences and priorities,” he concluded.
