Joy News has uncovered a fuel supply point in a protected forest reserve. This is located in the Akomfre community. The discovery has sparked outrage among environmental advocates and state officials.
Official sources say the unauthorized fuel depot was being built for earth-moving machinery. This machinery is involved in the destruction of forest cover. Reports indicate this destruction is part of a desperate search for gold.
Blessed Sogah from Joy News reports that authorities conducted a swift raid. The Minerals Development Fund led this operation, resulting in several arrests. Many of those arrested are Chinese nationals suspected of masterminding the illegal operation.
Authorities have not yet assessed the full extent of environmental damage. However, preliminary assessments show severe deforestation and disruption to local ecosystems.
This discovery raises concerns about illegal mining syndicates encroaching on Ghana’s protected lands. These operations are often backed by foreign operatives and weak enforcement allows them to continue.
Investigations into this syndicate are ongoing.
