Research staff from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) are urging Parliament to urgently repeal the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022 (L.I. 2462).

They argue that if Parliament can be recalled to grant tax exemptions, it should act with equal urgency to address the illegal mining crisis, commonly known as galamsey.

The researchers warn that L.I. 2462, which permits mining in forest reserves, is a "ticking time bomb" threatening the nation's economic progress.

They call for immediate action to combat the destructive practices and prevent further environmental damage.
