The Ghana Mine Workers Union has strongly criticized the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation 2022 (L.I. 2462), calling it one of Parliament’s most regressive laws.
General Secretary Abdul Moomin Gbana urged for its immediate revocation, citing the environmental dangers it poses. Speaking on Citi FM, he called for the creation of specialized courts to address illegal mining (galamsey) cases swiftly.
Gbana warned that if no action is taken by the end of September, the union will resort to protests and a nationwide strike to push for their demands, fearing worsening environmental impacts.
