Ken Tweneboah Kodua, Vice Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), criticized the government’s reluctance to ban small-scale mining due to economic concerns.
Speaking on Newsfile, Kodua argued that the dangers posed by illegal mining, such as environmental damage and health risks, outweigh any revenue benefits.
He emphasized that protecting lives and the environment should take precedence over economic gains.
Kodua called for a complete halt on mining activities to audit licenses and ensure responsible operations.
The TUC has threatened to strike at the end of the month if the government does not take decisive action against galamsey.
