Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey leads the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining. He has called for a state of emergency in areas affected by illegal mining, known as galamsey.
In an interview on Joy FM's Top Story, he emphasized the need to protect Ghana’s natural resources. He believes this is crucial for future generations. He noted that current concerns are similar to those raised in past administrations.
Dr. Ashigbey urged President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action. He stated that armed groups attacking Forestry Commission officers require immediate attention. The government should respond to illegal mining with the same urgency as fuel shortages and electricity crises.
He warned that time is running out. If swift action isn’t taken, environmental and public health damage may become irreversible.
Dr. Ashigbey praised citizens protesting for stronger government action against illegal mining. He expressed support for their efforts and accountability demands from elected leaders.
