Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, founder of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has criticized the lack of urgent action from Ghana’s leaders to address illegal mining (galamsey), which is severely polluting the country’s water bodies.
Speaking on Joy News, he called for a state of emergency to protect the environment and warned that without action, the coalition will mobilize public pressure.
Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has threatened to strike by the end of September if the government doesn’t impose a total ban on galamsey, citing massive environmental damage and health risks.
