The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, is taking action against illegal mining. This practice is commonly known as galamsey.
His comments came after a military operation in the Western Region. The operation uncovered and dismantled a major illegal mining settlement. This settlement housed over 10,000 residents.
On April 16, Dr. Omane Boamah posted on Facebook about the government's commitment to this issue. He promised a renewed urgency in tackling illegal mining.
He stated that the military's intervention marks the start of a strict strategy. “We’ll talk less and let action guide us,” he wrote.
The Defence Minister warned those still involved in illegal mining activities. He specifically mentioned protected areas.
“Leave the forest reserves and water bodies,” he urged. He emphasized that they should save their lives and protect the environment.
Dr. Boamah highlighted that the Armed Forces have both mandate and support to act decisively.
“The Ghana Armed Forces has been empowered,” he said. He indicated strong political will to combat illegal mining operations and protect natural resources in Ghana.
