Galamsey fight isn’t about clout – Barker-Vormawor blasts Okatakyie Afrifa over suspension of ‘Galamsey Must F

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a FixTheCountry convener and activist, is disappointed. He criticized the organizers of the "Galamsey Must Fall" demonstration. The protest was meant to last three days against illegal mining in Ghana. However, it was suspended on the second day due to low attendance.

Barker-Vormawor expressed his frustration about canceling the protest. He believes true conviction shows persistence despite setbacks. He recalled previous demonstrations where small numbers did not deter participants.

He stated, “I have just found out that the Galamsey Must Fall demonstration has been called off. My heart is heavy. Is this how we lose the fight—just because people didn’t show up?” He emphasized that fighting galamsey is about protecting Ghana’s environment and future.

“It’s not about clout or political points,” he said. “It’s about our land, water, and future.” He warned that when the last tree falls, hashtags won’t help us.

Barker-Vormawor urged organizers and activists to reflect on their approach. He called for collaboration among NGOs and civic groups for a stronger movement. A better-planned march for environmental defense is necessary.

Meanwhile, the Generational Rights Protection Society has also suspended its planned protest today, April 29. They intended to continue their demonstration from April 28 against illegal mining activities.

After meeting with Accra Police Command, they agreed to postpone the protest for further discussions. The police requested this suspension to prepare adequately for future actions.

The group thanked the police for their cooperation during the protests. They acknowledged the challenges faced but accepted the plea from authorities for postponement.
