Gari producers in the Savannah Region are facing serious challenges. These issues have caused a decline in production. As a result, life has become difficult for many residents. Students, traders, and processors rely on gari for their livelihoods.
Most people in the Savannah Region are farmers. They grow cash crops like maize, yam, potatoes, and beans. However, gari processing is still the main occupation. Many farmers focus on cassava cultivation, which is essential for these products.
A large part of the region's economy depends on gari production. Traders told Citi Business News that processing challenges have raised prices. Hawawu Kawutey, a gari producer, mentioned high transport costs as a major issue.
She explained that hiring tricycles to move cassava is expensive. Often, farm produce arrives at factories in poor condition due to delays. Bad roads contribute to this problem and increase transport costs when vehicles break down.
Ayishetu Issah noted that gari producers have not received any government support or relief measures.
