Gbegbeyise-Shiabu residents hopeful as sea defence wall progresses

Residents of Gbegbeyise-Shiabu in Dansoman are feeling hopeful. Work is progressing on the 5-kilometre sea defence wall project. This project aims to protect communities from flooding and tidal waves. It has faced significant delays but is now moving forward.

On April 28, residents spoke to Channel One News about their optimism. They noted that there have been no major incidents recently. However, they believe the real impact will show during heavy rains in June and July. One resident said, "There have been a lot of changes, and we have seen improvement."

Another resident mentioned that damage from the sea has reduced. They are waiting for the rain to see if the defence is effective. "At the moment, we can’t conclude," they added.

Wilberforce Mensah, the Assembly Member for Gbebu-Mpoase Electoral Area, urged contractors to speed up work. He said, "The sea has disturbed people for a long time." Thanks to efforts from the former MP and government, conditions have improved. He hopes for timely completion so residents can enjoy lasting protection.

The Site Manager shared that while the project was set for four years, it may finish sooner—possibly in two to three years.
