The Generational Rights Protection Society is urging the government to act against illegal mining, known as galamsey. This practice is harming communities and the environment in Ghana.
Prominent media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah led the protest. The aim was to express public frustration over the government's slow response to this crisis.
Protesters wore red and black clothing. They gathered at Obra Spot in Accra and marched toward Jubilee House. Their placards read messages like “Blood, Gold, Greed!” and “Stop Galamsey Now!”
One protester spoke about the lack of clean water in her area. She said, “I joined this demonstration because there is no potable water where I work. Galamsey must stop.” Many others shared similar feelings.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah expressed concern about the destruction caused by galamsey. He noted that it harms water bodies, forests, and farmlands. This destruction has led to increased kidney-related illnesses and loss of lives.
He acknowledged that the President has been in office for only four months. However, he argued that urgent action can still be taken. He referenced President Mahama's quick actions within his first four months.
Afrifa-Mensah stated, “This current administration has also acted quickly when it suited them.” He concluded by saying, “It’s a matter of priorities.”
