Ghana Airways’ first DC-10 Pilot, Captain Alec Grant Sam, passes away at 94

Captain (Rtd) Alec Grant Sam, the first pilot to fly Ghana Airways’ DC-10 from London to Accra, has passed away at age 94.

He died peacefully on March 8, 2025, at his residence in Teshie-Nungua Estates, Accra, surrounded by family.

A pioneer of Ghana Airways, Captain Sam’s flying career spanned over 35 years, rising to Chief Pilot, Director of Flight Operations, and Managing Director before retiring in 1995.

He later served as an aviation consultant and chaired investigations into the 2012 Allied Air crash.

His legacy remains integral to Ghana’s aviation history. He is survived by his wife, two children, and five grandchildren.
