The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, announced new anti-galamsey operations. These operations target illegal mining across Ghana. They focus on forest reserves and water bodies.
Dr. Boamah described the operations as "surgical." They are happening simultaneously in three military commands: Northern, Central, and Southern. Each command targets areas known for illegal mining.
In the Northern Command, operations focus on Bole and the Black Volta Basin. These regions have seen increased galamsey activities recently. The Central Command is active in Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves. These areas are vital for Ghana’s ecological preservation.
The Southern Command operates in Jerusalem and the Subri Forest Reserve. Both locations are hotspots for harmful mining practices. Dr. Boamah reported that several excavators have been seized during these operations.
Additionally, makeshift shelters set up by illegal miners have been dismantled. This is part of efforts to reclaim natural resources in Ghana. “These operations show our commitment to stopping illegal mining,” said Dr. Boamah.
He stressed that the Ghana Armed Forces will maintain a strong presence in these areas. This aims to deter further encroachments and protect the environment for future generations.
