Ghana Federation of Labour protests TUC’s conduct at 2025 May Day Celebration

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has criticized the Trades Union Congress (TUC). They claim TUC showed a lack of respect during this year’s May Day parade in Accra.

In a letter to the TUC Secretary-General, dated May 1, 2025, GFL expressed strong disapproval. They were disappointed by the marginalization and disrespect shown at the event.

The GFL stated that TUC speeches did not reflect broader labour community views. They noted that GFL's input was absent from these addresses. This situation is deeply offensive and unacceptable to them.

The GFL also disagreed with TUC comments about the Chief Justice controversy. They said this matter had not been discussed among labour leaders. Issuing public statements without legal consultation was premature and presumptuous, according to GFL.

Additionally, they criticized how illegal mining (galamsey) was addressed. The remarks were made without agreement from all labour groups. Any commitment to this issue must be discussed collectively, they stated.

GFL warned that uncoordinated remarks could seem politically motivated. This could damage the credibility of labour advocacy efforts.

Another concern was GFL's exclusion from the program lineup. They were not allowed to deliver a solidarity message at the event. The event was dominated by TUC officers, highlighting a lack of inclusiveness.

GFL called for an emergency meeting of interim Organised Labour Leadership before May ends. This meeting should address stalled structures and promote inclusive collaboration.

Despite their protest, GFL reaffirmed its commitment to unity in the labour movement. However, they emphasized that respect, consultation, and transparency are essential for collective efforts.
