Ghana Museums and Monuments Board commemorates International Day of Museums

As part of this year’s International Day of Museums, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) is offering free admission. This offer is for all basic and Senior High Schools. It runs from May 18 to May 25 at the National Museum.

This initiative aims to provide cultural and historical education to youth. The youth are seen as the leaders of the future.

An official statement from GMMB and ICOM Ghana was signed by Mr. Kwesi Essel-Blankson. He is the Acting Executive Director. The statement urged all Ghanaians to visit museums for cultural reorientation.

The statement also appealed for more government support for the National Museum.

May 18 is recognized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) as International Museums Day (IMD). This day highlights the transformative role museums play in society.

This year’s IMD theme is “The future of museums in rapidly changing communities.” It focuses on how museums adapt to social changes due to technology and environmental issues.

These changes threaten fragile cultures around the world. The theme aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 8, 9, and 11).

Museums support local economies by creating jobs and empowering people with knowledge. They foster creativity, embrace technology, and promote sustainable urban development.

In Ghana, museums are vital to the country’s historical narrative. They serve as repositories of colonial history and Ghanaian cultural heritage.

Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah commissioned the National Museum in 1957. This was done on the eve of Ghana’s independence to foster national identity and unity.

However, there is disappointment that GMMB has not been fully empowered. This limits their ability to achieve the visions of Ghana's founding fathers.

Despite these challenges, GMMB has played a crucial role in promoting national unity. They preserve cultural identity through public education and community engagement.

The statement commended all staff for their dedication and selfless service.
