Ghana Police arrest 49 galamseyers at various locations

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 49 people for illegal mining.

These arrests are part of efforts to combat illegal mining activities.

Operations occurred in several regions, including:

- Western Region: Huniso, Wassa-Dadieso, Wassa-Gyapa
- Ashanti Region: Akrokerri
- Central Region: Dunkwa-On-Offin, Diaso
- Eastern Region: Awin River at Pankese and Akyem Akwadum

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno led these operations.

All suspects are currently in police custody and assisting investigations.

They are expected to be formally charged soon.

The Ghana Police plan more operations to address illegal mining and its environmental effects.

President John Dramani Mahama announced a permanent ban on mining in forest reserves.

He discussed his administration's first 120 days in office.

Mahama stated they have taken decisive action through a five-point strategy.

This includes regulatory reforms and strengthening law enforcement.

Joint task forces have been formed for arrests and equipment seizures.

Collaboration with stakeholders is also part of the strategy.

Seven out of nine forest reserves have been reclaimed from illegal miners.

On March 20, 2025, a legislative instrument was presented to Parliament.

This amendment aims to remove the president’s power to approve mining in forest reserves.

Mahama plans to amend the Minerals and Mining Act of 2003.

This amendment would completely prohibit mining in forest reserves.
