Rail services between Accra and Tema have stopped. Workers of Ghana Railways Company Limited are on an indefinite strike. They are protesting seven months of unpaid salaries.
This strike began this morning. It has disrupted daily commuters and freight transport significantly.
The workers say the delay in salary payments is unbearable. Many struggle to provide for their families and meet basic needs.
Franklin Cobbinah, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Railway Workers’ Union, spoke to JoyNews. He expressed frustration over the government's neglect of their welfare.
"We’ve waited for seven months," he said. "When should we ask for our salary? The time is now." He added that they started demanding payment last year but were told to wait for a new sector minister.
Mr. Cobbinah also mentioned that the sector is not generating revenue now. Bauxite transport from Awaso to the port has been suspended.
"For now, we are not making any money," he explained. "We used to run bauxite from Awaso to the port."
The workers will remain off the job until they receive all outstanding payments. They want sustainable measures to protect their livelihoods in place as well.
