Ghana, US discuss 10% tariff as Foreign Minister hosts US ambassador

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met with US Ambassador Virginia Palmer. They discussed the new 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports. This tariff will take effect on April 5, 2025.

Ambassador Palmer explained that the tariff is not aimed at Ghana. It seeks to correct trade imbalances and follows the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

She noted that some products are exempt from this tariff. Oil, gas, and energy-related products will not be affected. However, AGOA-related exports will face tariffs.

The meeting also addressed possible exemptions for cocoa and garments. Both sides agreed to work together to minimize job losses and economic impact.

A statement confirmed that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Trade will engage US authorities. Their goal is to mitigate the effects of the tariff while maintaining strong bilateral relations.
