Ghana Water Company begins controlled spillage at Weija dam to prevent overflow

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced controlled spillage at the Weija Dam. Rising water levels from recent rains threaten the dam's safety and nearby properties.

In a statement, GWCL explained that increasing inflows forced them to start spillage. This action aims to prevent overflow or collapse, which could endanger lives downstream.

"We will begin spillage at a low rate to minimize impact," the statement said. However, the actual volume released will depend on ongoing inflow rates.

GWCL emphasized that spillage will continue as long as water levels are high. This measure is necessary to protect both the dam and surrounding communities.

Residents downstream of the Weija Dam should stay alert and take precautions. Authorities will monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.

This controlled spillage highlights challenges in managing water infrastructure during Ghana’s rainy season. It also underscores the importance of early warnings to prevent disasters.
