Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has issued a warning to institutions owing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He stated that power supply will be cut off if they do not pay their bills.
He specifically mentioned the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) as a major defaulter. The company has not made any payments for its electricity use.
“Ghana Water has not paid even one cedi,” he said. He expressed concern and noted that he had written to the President about this issue.
Jinapor criticized Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for not paying their debts. “Many MMDAs are not paying,” he said. “Ordinary Ghanaians are paying, so MMDAs should too.”
He warned that if GWCL continues to sell water without paying its electricity bills, they will be disconnected. “We’ll cut them because you [Ghanaians] are paying,” he added.
The Minister also called for a review of GWCL’s procurement processes to reduce costs. He emphasized that ECG will no longer allow state institutions to receive services without fulfilling their financial obligations.
“I think we need to look at Ghana Water’s procurement and ensure we cut costs,” he stated. He mentioned that ordinary consumers will pay, but institutions like Parliament and GWCL must also meet their responsibilities.
In an interview with Lily Mohammed on GHToday, Jinapor reinforced the government's commitment to debt recovery. He made it clear that defaulting institutions will face strict consequences.
