Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to economic cooperation with the UK. This followed a meeting with UK Trade Envoy Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Akosua Dentaa Amoateng MBE.
During the discussions, he emphasized the need to finalize a bilateral agreement between Ghana and the UK. He mentioned that ongoing debt restructuring has delayed critical projects. Securing this agreement would help start these projects quickly.
France has already committed to a similar agreement, which gives him hope that the UK will do the same soon. The meeting also explored opportunities for technical collaboration, especially in tax administration.
The Minister highlighted Ghana’s plans for major VAT reform. He expressed interest in learning from the UK's efficient VAT system. He stressed the importance of collaboration between HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
This partnership aims to strengthen Ghana’s tax policies and enhance revenue mobilization. Bell Ribeiro-Addy, a UK MP with Ghanaian heritage, reassured him of the UK's commitment to improving its relationship with Ghana.
She stated that the UK sees Ghana as a strategic partner, not just a former colony. The focus is on working together for shared economic prosperity.
Dr. Ato Forson welcomed these assurances and reiterated Ghana’s readiness to cooperate with the UK across various sectors. He hopes these discussions will lead to concrete actions that promote economic growth for both nations.
