Ghana committed to economic transformation – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has stressed his administration's focus. They aim to reduce public debt and drive economic transformation.

Speaking at the African Union Debt Conference in Lomé, Togo, he shared his views on debt. Mahama believes debt should not hinder development. Instead, it should create opportunities for future generations.

He stated, “Ghana is committed to rebuilding its fiscal buffers.” The country aims to strengthen institutions and foster inclusive growth. However, he emphasized that fiscal consolidation should not harm social protection.

“Our strategy includes protecting investments in education and youth empowerment,” he added. He also mentioned rural development and improving debt transparency through an independent fiscal council. Additionally, expanding the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund will help attract private capital.

Mahama urged African leaders to borrow responsibly. This approach should meet their populations' development needs. Reflecting on Ghana’s debt experience, he noted the complexity of recovery.

“Borrowing must be tied to high-impact projects,” Mahama said. These projects should deliver tangible results for citizens. In Ghana, priorities include value-added agriculture and renewable energy.

Other focuses are road infrastructure, digital infrastructure, health, and education sectors. These areas can create jobs and foster innovation while boosting exports.
