President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana aims to match Côte d’Ivoire's cocoa processing rate. He believes this can happen in the next four to five years.
During a session at the African Development Bank's annual meeting, he discussed Ghana's progress. He also pointed out ongoing trade challenges facing African economies.
“The world economic order is rigged against Africa,” he stated. He noted that while Africa can add value, non-tariff barriers complicate exports for local businesses.
He explained that local processors face difficulties exporting finished products. Often, they need foreign partners to set up processing plants and navigate regulations.
Despite these challenges, President Mahama highlighted improvements in Ghana’s cocoa processing capacity. “We have increased from about 25% processed cocoa to around 40%,” he said.
He acknowledged Côte d’Ivoire's achievement of 50% processing. “We hope to reach their level in four to five years and go beyond.”
