Ghana does not ‘need’ a cedi appreciation – NPP’s Ahiagbah argues

Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He believes Ghana does not need a stronger cedi. Instead, he argues that sustainable employment is what Ghana needs now.

Ahiagbah stated that a weak cedi would benefit John Mahama’s 24-hour economy program. He explained this during an appearance on Good Morning Ghana.

He said, “Celebrating the exchange rate and cedi strengthening supports an import-dependent economy.” He compared this situation to the US-China trade issues. The US claims China manipulates its currency to make exports cheaper.

Ahiagbah questioned the government's strategy for a 24-hour economy. He argued that a weak currency helps drive exports. A strong cedi makes imports more expensive, which complicates policy alignment.

He criticized the Mahama government for shifting focus from production-led plans. Instead, they seem to be operating passport offices in shifts. Ahiagbah emphasized that jobs are essential for people.

He reminded Mahama of his promise for a production-led 24-hour economy. Ahiagbah expressed confusion over current operations at passport offices. He concluded by stating, “Ghana needs sustainable employment, not cedi appreciation.”
