Ghana doesn't 'need' Cedi appreciation - Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah is the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He stated that Ghana does not need a stronger cedi. Instead, the focus should be on creating jobs and boosting production.

Ahiagbah expressed his views on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana. He said, "The real matter is not the strength of the cedi." He emphasized that celebrating a strong cedi is not what Ghana needs right now.

He explained that a strong cedi could harm economic goals. This is especially true if the goal is to promote export-led growth. Ahiagbah noted, "If your currency is strong, you must be aiming to be import dependent."

He questioned the government's policy objectives regarding the cedi's strength. "What is the end game for even this strengthening of the cedi?" he asked. He wondered if it was to become more import-dependent.

Ahiagbah stressed that job creation should be a priority. He mentioned young people who voted for change in hopes of jobs. "Your cedi strengthening doesn’t mean anything to that person in terms of jobs," he said.

His comments come as John Dramani Mahama's government celebrates recent cedi appreciation against major currencies. However, Ahiagbah believes policies should focus on economic growth and job creation instead of crediting a strong cedi.
